The Best RV Routes and Stops in Wyoming

From the Tetons and Yellowstone to the Beartooth Highway and Wind River Canyon, the drives and campgrounds worth planning a Wyoming trip around.

Wyoming rewards RV travelers with wide-open highways, high mountain passes, geothermal wonders and frontier towns. Whether you drive a big Class A or tow a small teardrop, these routes belong on your list.

1. Grand Teton to Yellowstone

Follow US-191 and US-89 north from Jackson past the Teton Range and Jackson Lake, then along the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway into Yellowstone. Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are highlights.

2. Beartooth Highway (US-212)

This road climbs from near Cody into Montana over Beartooth Pass at nearly 11,000 feet. Expect alpine tundra, glacial lakes and enormous views. It also has switchbacks, grades near 7 percent and narrow shoulders, so it suits experienced drivers in small or mid-size rigs. Snow can close the pass well into early summer.

3. Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway

Between Shoshoni and Thermopolis, the highway follows the Wind River through a canyon with walls more than 2,000 feet high. Signs along the way explain the ancient rock layers. End the day soaking at the hot springs in Thermopolis.

4. Cloud Peak Skyway (US-16)

The gentlest crossing of the Bighorn Mountains, this route runs from Buffalo to Ten Sleep over Powder River Pass. Use low gears on the descent to protect your brakes.

Planning tips

Fuel stops can be far apart, so top off whenever you can. Winds across southern Wyoming are strong enough to make high-profile vehicles hard to handle. Check forecasts and road conditions before you set out.
